Perhaps I'm using MySQL in an unusual way. I was thinking of just having alice and bob containers, where the console client is used on one to query the other.

I'm probably using MySQL in an obscure way:

root $
root $ docker run --name alice_the_mysql_server -tide MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=password mysql/mysql-server:latest
root $
root $ docker run --name bob_the_mysql_client -v /home/nicholas/github/test_db/employees.sql:/sql --link alice_the_mysql_server:mysql -it arey/mysql-client -h mysql -p password -D employees -e "source /home/nicholas/github/test_db/employees.sql"
Enter password:
ERROR 2059 (HY000): Authentication plugin 'caching_sha2_password' cannot be loaded: Error loading shared library /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/caching_sha2_password.so: No such file or directory
root $

does this relate to a missing library on the host system? I don't see that it would (reasonably) be a missing file or directory on either container. Perhaps I'm not spinning up the container properly?

I was also looking at the MySQL router, but that requires a running innodb which would be overly complicated for my use case.

Is this an unusual configuration or topology?
