I would like to update gitlab automatically. Our docker-compose.yaml file looks like this:

web:
  image: 'gitlab/gitlab-ee:latest'
  restart: always
  hostname: 'example.com'
  environment:
    GITLAB_OMNIBUS_CONFIG: |
      external_url 'http://example.com'
  ports:
    - '1080:80'
    - '1443:443'
    - '22:22'
  volumes:
    - '/srv/gitlab/config:/etc/gitlab'
    - '/srv/gitlab/logs:/var/log/gitlab'
    - '/srv/gitlab/data:/var/opt/gitlab'

These are the manual commands I enter for update:

sudo docker-compose pull && sudo docker-compose up -d

I would like an automated update routine for this. Some improvements would be necessary for stability:

  • gitlab/gitlab-ee:latest break to often. It would be better to ask for the latest 14.9.x
  • Remove old docker images

Could you please help me improving the update process?

  • What have you tried so far in terms of automating this process?

  • Thanks for asking @larsks. This is now a manual process. I would like to do the update commands using crontab. Do you have other suggestions?
